Deepak Chahar was promoted to bat at No. 7 and the Indian pacer responded with a fine half-century to showcase his batting credentials. When India seemed down and out at 223/7, Chahar stitched a valuable partnership with Jasprit Bumrah to bring India closer to the target, to only fall four runs short of the mark.

Chahar was visibly distraught after the game, but his performances were a reminder that the 29-year-old could fill in the all-round role for the team. This is Chahar’s second ODI fifty, with the first one coming in Sri Lanka last August, where he saw the team over the line with an unbeaten 69 off 82 balls.

Speaking to the press after the game, captain KL Rahul said, “Deepak gave us a real chance of winning the game. Quite an exciting game, just disappointed we ended up on the losing side. We gave ourselves a real chance, something we can learn from and get better. Quite obvious where we’ve gone wrong. No shying away from it. At times our shot selection has been poor. Even with the ball we haven’t been hitting the right areas consistently. Have played well in patches but haven’t built pressure over a long period. Can’t fault the boys for the passion and effort. In terms of skill and understanding the situation – sometimes we’ve gone wrong.”

He added, “But it happens – we’ve got some new guys in the team. In the one-day series at times we’ve kept doing the same mistakes. It’s early in our journey to the World Cup. We can go back, have some hard conversations. Have had a great time in SA. Have been looked after really well. We’ve shown a lot of fight.”

Head coach Rahul Dravid was also all praise for Deepak Chahar during the virtual press conference. He responded to an ANI query saying, “I mean Deepak Chahar has shown in the opportunities he has gotten with us in Sri Lanka and over here well, he has got some really good ability with the bat. We know what he can do with the ball as well. I have seen him at India A as well and I know he can bat really well so certainly gives us a lot more options.”
