Iyer had undergone through a shoulder surgery in 2021
Shreyas Iyer had undergone a scheduled surgery to his left shoulder, which he partially dislocated when he landed awkwardly after putting in a dive in the field during an ODI series against England in March 2021. Since then, the 27-year-old has been a victim of the short ball on numerous occasions. Apart from today, Iyer recently perished to a short-length delivery against Tim Southee. He bagged a first-ball duck in the third T20I against New Zealand played on November 22 (Tuesday).
Despite his struggles against short-delivery, Iyer has some excellent numbers in ODIs this year
- Even after failing to counter the short-pitched deliveries, Iyer has been in prolific touch in ODIs this year.
- Iyer has played 15 ODI games this year.
- The right-handed batter has scored 639 runs in just 13 innings with his average being 58.09.
- He has also stroked five fifties and one hundred with his best being 113*.
- Iyer is playing at a strike-rate of 93.55 which is considered more than good in ODIs.

KL Rahul holds Indian innings together
With the Indian top-order falling cheaply, senior batter KL Rahul held the Indian innings together. Playing as a wicket-keeper batter, Rahul came to bat after the fall of the third wicket. The 30-year-old completed his half-century in just 50 balls with wickets falling around him. Rahul position in the Indian squad has been under the scanner, but a fifty in the first ODI encounter will give him a lot of confidence.
