In the last couple of months, both the players have been given opportunities to shine alternately. On some occasions, both of them have also played in the same match. That is exactly what Gavaskar wants.
He believes Rohit Sharma and co need to take risks in the World Cup, and play Karthik at number seven. The Indian management has used Karthik as the finisher of India. After seeing him deliver for RCB in IPL 2022 in the last few overs, the Indian team has gone the same route. He has been decent, but has not been able to bring that kind of success to international cricket.

It is at that juncture, where the upcoming six matches in the shorter format for India will come handy. The India vs Australia three-match T20 series starts on Tuesday. South Africa will visit India for three T20 matches too besides three ODIs.

The management will have to use these matches to finalise the team combination for T20 World Cup. The injury to Ravindra Jadeja has only made matters complicated for Team India.
Pant becomes almost a necessity to add variety in the India batting line-up with him being a left-hander. But then, the Asia Cup has also shown that the team fail to finish games or score quickly at the fag end if Karthik is not there.
Irrespective of how things move in the next few weeks, the team management have a tough job at their hands.
