Chad Stahelski detailed How Keanu Reeves Trained for John Wick 4 on Joe Rogan Experience

Appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Stahelski revealed that Reeves started training about five months before filming began. “He was coming out of a couple of films so he wasn’t in the fight shape. So you can’t jump back in so we gave him 3-5 weeks with some of the trainers we found to get into shape. He cut weight and got back to where he was on the Matrix,” Stahelski said.

Once Reeves got into shape, the serious fight training began. “And then we struck him with the fight team and the stunt guys and within 3 months he got into shape,” Stahelski said. A new element of Reeves’ training this time around was Brazilian jiu-jitsu. “Jiu jitsu was the new thing for him. Probably not physically demanding but you know how it is you use your hands and feet. I mean you’ll remember the time you transitioned to Jiu Jitsu. It looks easy but completely an eye opener,” Stahelski told Rogan.

Reeves’ dedication to training and mastering new skills for each John Wick film has been well documented. For the third film, Parabellum, Reeves learned knife-throwing and trained intensely with tactical weapons. His preparation and work ethic have gained the respect of his director, costars and fans alike.

With each new installment raising the bar for stunts and action, Reeves’ rigorous training and preparation ensures the success and believability of the John Wick franchise. As Chad Stahelski put it, within just a few months of starting his training for John Wick 4, Reeves was able to get into the incredible shape and skills required to pull off the film’s complex fight sequences and action set pieces.
