From 30 hours of finale in 2023 to 3 hours of IPL 2024 final: A stark contrast

KKR dominant performance stands in stark contrast to the previous year's extended final, making the 2024 edition a much swifter and more decisive affair.

The 2024 IPL final was a stark contrast to the rain-marred marathon of a final witnessed in 2023. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a match that became the shortest Indian Premier League final ever played, clocking in at just under three hours.

IPL 2023 final stretched across three days

The previous year’s IPL final between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) was an entirely different story. Played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the match was plagued by persistent rain and hailstorms, forcing it to be extended across three days.

CSK vs GT was originally scheduled for a Sunday evening start on May 28 but persistent rain and hailstorms forced a day’s delay. GT batted first on the reserve day and put up a mammoth 214/4, the highest total in an IPL final.

However, the CSK chase was halted by rain after just 3 balls with the score at 4/0. Despite the rain stopping early, a large puddle on a practice pitch caused a lengthy delay.

Finally, the match resumed with reduced overs well past midnight on Tuesday, May 30th, with CSK ultimately emerging victorious to claim the IPL 2023 title after a marathon three-day final.

KKR dominant bowling secures shortest IPL final

This year, however, KKR’s exceptional bowling performance ensured a swift conclusion to the IPL 2024 final. Played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, their bowlers bundled out the SRH batting line-up for a meager 113 runs, marking the lowest total ever recorded in an IPL final.

Starc, Russell, and Rana orchestrate SRH collapse

Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell, and Harshit Rana were the architects of SRH’s downfall. Starc dismissed the in-form Abhishek Sharma in the very first over, while Viabhav Arora followed suit by sending Travis Head back for a duck in the next over.

This set the tone for a complete collapse, as the rest of the SRH batsmen struggled against the relentless KKR bowling attack.

KKR batters cruise to win

In reply, KKR openers Rahmadullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer put together a solid 91-run partnership, effectively sealing the deal for their team. Venkatesh Iyer’s brilliant knock of 52 runs off just 26 balls included the winning run, securing KKR’s third IPL title.

The emphatic win sparked joyous celebrations within the KKR dugout and amongst the team owners, Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. This dominant performance stands in stark contrast to the previous year’s extended final, making the 2024 edition a much swifter and more decisive affair.
