On Saturday night, Tyson Fury received more than he had anticipated. In preparation for a matchup with WBA, IBF, and IBO champion Oleksandr Usyk, the WBC heavyweight champion was predicted to easily defeat former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, who was making his professional boxing debut.

Everyone who was expecting a glorified sparring contest, akin to Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Conor McGregor, was taken aback by what really transpired. Since he parried most of Fury’s heavy blows and kept up the heat, Ngannou was involved in the battle from the start.

In the third round, the Cameroonian native even managed to knock out Fury with a left hand. But he was unable to take advantage of much of his victories, as Fury appeared to use superior boxing technique to win each round on the scorecards. Ultimately, it was a heroic attempt from a novice who was defeated by a split vote and never gave up in the face of difficulty.

This past Saturday in Saudi Arabia, WBC champion Fury defeated Ngannou via split decision in their crossover boxing bout; an outcome that he finds unacceptable. After taking down Fury in the third round, the former heavyweight champion of the UFC battled him head-to-head for the full ten rounds.

Francis Ngannou still seems dissatisfied about the end results of the boxing match, as he stated on X via a post,

Fury maintained that he didn’t think less of Ngannou, but a lot of people thought he did. Ngannou managed the unexpected since Fury didn’t give him his full attention.

Fury performed more like the fighter from 2013, when he was dropped early from the fight against Steve Cunningham after struggling for most of it. This was in contrast to the fighter from more recently, who stopped Deontay Wilder twice and shot to prominence on the pound-for-pound rankings. “I watched the elbow video tens of times and I don’t understand why the referee didn’t take a point from him.”

Fury maintains that despite weighing a career-high 277 pounds and producing very little, he trained hard for Ngannou. It was a disgrace for Fury and the boxing community to prevail via split decision over a competitor making his professional boxing debut.
