Right from the start, Tejaswin was at his absolute best as he cleared 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.19m all in his very first attempt. Tejaswin who holds the national record of 2.29m in High Jump then attempted 2.22 m and also cleared it quite effortlessly as he raised the hopes of clinching a podium-finish.

He however could not clear 2.25 m in his two attempts and was suddenly looking out of contention for a medal. However, with only four athletes making it to the 2.25m mark, Bahamas’ Donald Thomas failed in his final attempt which ensured Tejaswin a bronze medal as he had lesser failed attempts. With this the 23-year old bagged India’s first medal in the track & field events at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

His journey to the Commonwealth Games has not all been easy as he had to fight court cases and clear administrative hurdles to get a last-minute clearance from the authorities to board the flight to Birmingham.

  • Tejaswin was the only Indian High-jumper to achieve the Athletics Federation of India’s qualification mark of 2.27 m for the CWG 2022.
  • But within a few days, he was left out of the Indian Athletics squad as he failed to take part in the Inter-state Meet, which was held in Chennai in July, that clashed with the NCAA Championships in the United States in which Tejaswin participated and achieved the 2.27 m mark.
  • Tejaswin then decided to fight this in court challenging the AFI’s decision and finally after some sleepless nights, he got the Delhi High Court’s verdict in his favour.
  • The AFI later told the court that Shankar’s name has been included in the team in place of Arokia Rajiv, who was in the initial 37-member team.
  • After this, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) made a request to the Birmingham organisers for late inclusion of Shankar. But it was rejected on July 7.
  • However, the organisers made a U-turn later and allowed the Delhi high jumper to participate in the quadrennial event.
  • He then hurriedly arranged for visa and was finally able to board the flight just three days ago to Birmingham.

From having undergone a roller-coaster of emotions, Tejaswin kept his cool and delivered in style with this stunning medal winning performance. This is India’s 18th medal in the CWG 2022 so far and was the fifth medal on Wednesday.
