SRH Released Players List: IPL 2023 Retention LIVE: Sunrisers Hyderabad have released their captain Kane Williamson, West Indies power-hitter Nicholas Pooran and bowling all-rounder Romario Shepherd ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction. IPL 2023: Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran and Romario Shepherd released

Williamson was, incidentally, their most expensive player at INR 14 crore and spent eight seasons with the Orange Army.
But following an underwhelming IPL 2022 season where they won six matches out of 14 and amassed 12 points, finishing in the 8th spot out of league standings, the Kiwi captain was released.
SRH will be in hunt for a new captain for the upcoming season with the options of South Africa power-hitter Aiden Markram and senior India fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar at place.
Pooran, meanwhile, was bought by SRH for INR 10.75 crore at the IPL mega-auction.
He accumulated 306 runs from 14 matches at top of the order for the franchise last season with an average of 38.25.
He was, however, let go off by the franchise ahead of the upcoming season despite his decent contribution with the bat.
Shepherd, the other player to be released by SRH, was roped in by the franchise for INR 7.75 crore.
But he got only three appearances in the previous season, making his release inevitable.

IPL 2023 Retention: How SRH performed under Williamson’s captaincy?

Kane Williamson was named as SRH skipper after team management decided to strip David Warner from the captaincy post in IPL 2021. The Orange Army would have wanted Williamson to have a successful outing as a captain during IPL 2022. However, SRH performed rather poorly as they lost seven out of 13 games under the senior batter’s captaincy.

However, more than captaincy, it his dwindling T20 form that has raised more questions than answers. Back home, he has faced questions over his spot in New Zealand’s Playing XI with poor strike rate and inconsistent performances.

Williamson is also costing SRH Rs 14 Crore. They would be looking to free up the fund and go for someone like Cameron Green or Ben Stokes to have a better balance. In Stokes, they will have a captaincy option as well. In such a scenario, Sunrisers Hyderabad could let Williamson go.

What are SRH options? – The Orange Army have several options available to replace Williamson. The likes of Aiden Markram and Bhuvneshwar Kumar can also be good options for the former IPL champions. As mentioned above, Bhuvi has already led SRH previously and he has been their one of the vital performers over the year. The senior batter from South Africa, Aiden Markram can also be a good option to replace Williamson.
