Nine South Africa cricket team pacers are reportedly injured at the moment, sparking a huge concern for the side ahead of ICC Champions Trophy. After Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the marquee tournament due to a back injury, it is now Gerald Coetzee and Lungi Ngidi’s turn to be on the sidelines. With pace bowling being the biggest strength for the side, the Proteas are now left in a lurch as they hope their pacers get fit in time for CT 2025. IPL franchises are also set to be impacted, given that South Africa pacers are part of teams like KKR, GT and MI.
South Africa’s injury woes can impact CT 2025, IPL 2025
Coetzee, who is a part of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, has been ruled out of the remainder of SA20 tournament due to a hamstring injury. South Africa are keeping their fingers crossed to hope that he recovers in time for Champions Trophy. Lungi Ngidi, who returned from injury only recently, missed the game against Paarl Royals on Monday, compounding South Africa’s woes. The Proteas are in dire straits as they need their pacers fit not just for Champions Trophy, but also for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June where they will lock horns with Australia.
“Currently there’s about nine South African fast bowlers injured across all the teams, so it is a worrying thing. We are trying to find reasons why, maybe it’s the lack of cricket, I don’t know. We lost three big guys in Lizaad, Nandre, and Gerald recently, so it’s big for us and we have to juggle with the guys that we have,” Albie Morkel said, as per The Indian Express.
