Rishabh Pant injury update: Dhruv Jurel to continue as keeper, southpaw still in pain

Rishabh Pant is all but confirmed to stay off the field on Day 2 of IND vs ENG 3rd Test as he hasn't recovered yet from his finger injury

Rishabh Pant is highly unlikely to take the field on Day 2 of IND vs ENG 3rd Test at Lord’s. The southpaw was forced to walk off the field after he was hit on the fingers by a delivery off Jasprit Bumrah. As a result, Dhruv Jurel took over the gloves from Pant for the remainder of play on Day 1.

No Pant for India on Day 2 at Lord’s

Ahead of play on Day 2, the BCCI confirmed that Pant was still recovering from the hit to his left index finger. It added that Jurel will continue to keep wickets.

As per Times of India, Pant had a batting practice session with coach Sitanshu Kotak but looked uncomfortable, and looked at his left hand multiple times, seemingly complaining that he was uncomfortable. Further, the report stated that Dhruv Jurel was seen doing keeping drills while Pant continued to have his session with Kotak. This serves as a strong indication that Jurel may continue to replace Pant on Day 2.

What happened to Pant?

The incident happened during the second session, in the 34th overs of the innings, when Jasprit Bumrah bowled one to Ollie Pope. Just as he collected the ball, he looked visibly in pain, and immediately the physio was called. But then, despite heavy bandaging on the hand, it was a forceful blow, and Rishabh Pant had to go off the field.

While India can survive the bowling part without Pant, they will require his services when they come out to bat. With that being said, Jurel has displayed exceptional skill and technique behind the stumps with the gloves on. India won’t be losing much if Pant stays off the field on Day 2 while they attempt to get the remaining six wickets.

England will resume their innings on Day 2 at 251/4, with Joe Root on 99 and Ben Stokes on 39. Like Pant, the England captain too had an injury scare on Day 1 but is cleared to take the field again on Day 2.
