Kolkata Knight Riders, who are gearing up for their match against Mumbai Indians, are currently in a festive mood as several celebrations are taking place. Recently, KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit and skipper Ajinkya Rahane celebrated Gudi Padwa and wished fans a Happy New Year via social media. Just after that, it was time for Eid, where many KKR players joined in the celebrations with a special Kolkata Biryani.
For KKR’s stylish batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the festival became even more special as the team’s chef added an Afghan twist to the biryani, bringing a wave of nostalgia for the wicketkeeper-batter.
KKR’s festive feast
Well, it all started when Rinku Singh was looking at a picture of Lucknowi Biryani, reminiscing about the flavours of home. In KKR’s special show “Knight Bites,” host Chef Kunal Khanna decided to prepare Kolkata Biryani. This biryani features traditional large potatoes, which are punctured and roasted with garam masala along with chicken. It is the potatoes and eggs that make Kolkata Biryani different from others.
But with Gurbaz in the team, the chef decided to make the biryani even more special for him by adding a unique twist. After mixing in fried onions and saffron-infused milk, the chef included “khubani” (dried apricots), a common ingredient in Afghan biryani.
Gurbaz also invited Moeen Ali to join this amazing feast. The English spinner relished the biryani while mentioning his preference for Yakhni Biryani, which is milder in spice. To this, Rinku immediately responded, “I like it spicy!”
During their conversation, they also discussed street food. Rinku revealed that golgappas were his only favourite, and he also learned that in Kolkata, they are known as puchka and gopchop.
The chef took the opportunity to share a bonus Afghan chutney recipe, made with chillies, coriander, tomatoes, and peppers. The taste of this chutney made Gurbaz quite emotional.
