Swiss Open Badminton Highlights: India’s top badminton players PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Shrikanth and HS Prannoy all made good start to their Swiss Open campaign by winning their respective first round encounters on Wednesday. Sindhu defeated Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt in straight sets. Saina Nehwal made a glittering start to her Swiss Open campaign, as she won 21-8, 21-13 against French qualifier Yaelle Hoyaux. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the second round of the Swiss Open by defeating Denmark’s qualifier Mads Christophersen 21-16,21-17 . HS Prannoy beat compatriot Sai Praneeth 25-23, 21-16 in the first round.

  • Earlier in the day, Aakarshi Kashyap kickstarted the first round proceedings for India and lost in straight sets to Germany’s Yvonne Li 21-5, 21-17.
  • Meanwhile Men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy defeated Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana 17-21, 21-11, 21-18.
  • Women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made first round exit as they were defeated by seond seeded Thailand pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai 21-10, 21-17.
  • Parupalli Kashyap made light work of French qualifier Enogat Roy by defeating him 21-17, 21-9
  •  Lakshya Sen has pulled out of the tournament citing fatigue after two successive final appearances in German Open and All England Championships.

PV Sindhu [IND] vs Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt [DEN]

Sindhu defeated Denmark’s uneeded Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt in straight sets to enter the second round of the Swiss Open. Sindhu, who is the second seed in the tournament is looking to get back on track this year after disappointing outings in the German Open and All England Championships, where she made second round exits.

Saina Nehwal [IND] beat Yaelle HOYAUX [FRA] 21-8, 21-13

Saina Nehwal comfortably won her first round by defeating France’s Yaelle Hoyaux in straight sets. The Indian got off to a great start with a 6-1 lead early in the game. She asserted her dominance throughout and won the first set 21-8.

In the second set, the French player made a good comeback as she lead the set strongly with the score at 8-5. Just when it looked like Hoyaux is on for a good fight, she suddenly started making one error after the other. She gave away easy points to Saina by hitting shots in the net, which helped Saina take a big lead and trounce her opponent in straight sets.

  • Saina didn’t had much work to do as she comfortably won the game by clinching the second set 21-13.
  • Hoyaux continued gifting points by either hitting in the net or behind the backline to give four easy points to Saina to trail 10-15.
  • The French’s player’s poor returns continued as Saina entered the break with a 11-8 lead.
  • Saina however kept her cool as three consecutive errors from her opponent helped her level the scores 8-8
  • Hoyaux makes a good comeback as she lead the first set 8-5.

Game 2

  • Saina continued to maintain her lead and dominated the first set by winning it 21-8
  • Saina enters the break with a 11-3 lead
  • Saina starts off on a strong note with a 6-1 lead

Game 1

World No.25 Saina Nehwal will play World No. 29 Yelle Hoyaux of France in the opening contest of the Swiss Open. Nehwal who missed six months due to an injury hasn’t displayed her best so far this year. She made second-round exits in Indian Open, German Open and All England Open. She will look to better her performance and get back to form in the Swiss Open but will be on the comeback trail against French opponent.

Kidambi Srikanth [IND] vs Mads CHRISTOPHERSEN [DEN]

2015 champion Kidambi Srikanth started his Swiss Open campaign on a positive note. The World No.13 defeated Denmark’s qualifier Mads Christophersen 21-16,21-17 in the first round on Wednesday to advanced to the second round. The 29-year old Indian will next face either Japan’s Koki Watanabe or France’s Christo Popov on Thursday.

Despite a good challenge from Christophersen, Srikanth dominatied the first set completely as he won it 21-16. In the second set though, Srikanth was pushed on the back foot as Christophersen started dominiating the proceedings. He was impressive with his cross court smashes and put pressure on the Indian. He went into the break with a narrow 11-10 lead. Srikanth continued to put up strong fight and it finally gave him result as he took the lead and managed to maintain it to win the second set 21-17 and advance to the next round.

  • 21-17 Srikanth held on to his lead and closes the game with a smash to advance to the second round.
  • 15-13 Christophersen hits in the net
  • 12-11 After a good rally, Srikanth manages to take the lead as Christophersen hits wide of the sideline.
  • 10-11 Srikanth squanders a shot into the net as Christophersen takes a narrow 11-10 to go into the break.
  • 8-10 Srikanth misjudges a shot that lands inside the backline to give Christophersen 10-8 lead.
  • 5-7 Christophersen unleases a terrific smash to which Srikanth had no answer.
  • 2-4 Christophersen starts off positively with an early lead.

Game 2 

  • 21-16 Srikanth closes the first set by winning it 21-16.
  • 18-16 Christophersen comes back with three successive points.
  • 17-13 Christophersen reduced the deficit to 14-13 but committed a couple of errors and a brilliant smash from Srikanth helped him extend his lead to 17-13.
  • 11-9 Christophersen hits outside the line to give Srikanth a narrow lead in the first set break.
  • 6-6 Christophersen levels the score with a good cross-court smash
  • 5-3 Srikanth hits wide, Christophersen struggles to defend it and hit it outside the side line.
  • 3-2. Srikanth soon takes the lead 3-2.
  • 0-2 Christophersen leads 2-0

Game 1

Parupalli Kashyap beat Enogat Roy  21-17, 21-9

Kashyap started the game on the front foot with a 7-4 lead, however the left-handed French player made a good comeback by scoring 4 consecutive points to take the lead. Kashyap however didn’t allow his opponent to settle as he won crucial points to go into the break with a 11-9 lead. Kashyap soon found himself with seven match points in hand and won the set 21-17. In the second set, Kashyap raced to a 11-3 lead by the break and asserted his domination as he wrapped up the game by winning the second set 21-9.

Ashmitha Chaliha beat Leonice Huet 19-21, 21-10, 21-11

Ashmitha Chaliha made a terrific come-from behind victory to defeat France’s Leonice Huet 19-21, 21-10, 19-11 in the first round of women’s singles. She started the game with a 3-1 lead, but Huet soon started dominating. She lead through the first break with the score at 11-9. But the left-handed Indian showcased her fighting spirit as she came back to take the lead at 15-14. She came very close to winning the first set but narrowly missed out on it as Huet won it 21-19.

Ashmitha however began the second set postively and entered the break with a dominant 11-3 lead. She continued her terrific runand thwarted her opponent by winning it 10-21. In the third set too she was at her best as she made light work of her opponent to advance to the second round.

Aakarshi Kashyap [IND] lost to Yvonne Li [GER] – 21-5, 21-17

Aakarshi Kashyap faced straight set defeat in the first round as Germany’s Yvonne Li breezed past her with a clinical 21-5, 21-17 victory. Right from the start, the game was an one-sided affair as Akarshi could manage to clinch just a solitary point until the first set break. She committed errors too many as she lost the first set, managing just 5 points.

In the second set, she put up a much better show as she managed to lead 7-6. However the German made a good comeback to enter the break with a 11-7 lead. Despite good efforts from Aakarshi, the German managed to hold on to the lead and won the game.

Doubles Draw – First Round 

Men’s Doubles

Chirag-Satwiksairaj [IND] defeat Fikri-Maulana [INS] 17-21, 21-11, 21-18

Hanumaiah-Surya [IND] lose to Ben Lane-Sean Vendy [ENG] 14-21, 17-21

Women’s Doubles

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand [IND] lost to Kititharakul-Prajongjai [THA] 10-21, 17-21

Mixed Doubles 

Sumeeth Reddy-Ashwini Ponnappa [IND] lost to Giquel-Delrue [FRA] 21-13, 21-9

Chirag-Satwiksairaj [IND] defeat Fikri-Maulana [INS] 17-21, 21-11, 21-18

Indian Men’s doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj Ranki Reddy made terrific comeback to defeat Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana 17-21, 21-11, 21-18. In a game that lasted 57 minutes, the Indonesian pair started the game positively with a 4-3 lead. However the Indian duo challenged the opposition to take a 11-9 lead going into the break. The Indian pair however lost their momentum with back to back errors to lose that made them lose the first set.

The Indian duo however dominated the second set right from the start to win it comfortably 21-11. The Indonesian duo came back in the deciding set and gave the Indian pair a mini scare as they entered the break with a 11-7 lead. Trailing 11-13, the Indian duo stepped up when it mattered the most as they brought forth their best game to take a 17-13 lead. From then on they closed out the game easily winning the deciding set 21-18.

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand [IND] loses to Kititharakul-Prajongjai [THA] 10-21, 17-21.

India’s unsseded Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand pair made a first round exit as the lost against Thailand’s second seeded pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai 21-10, 21-17.

The Indian duo who became the first pair to reach the semi-finals of the All England Open couldn’t do much against the stronger Thai pair as they dominated the Indian teenagers throughout the game. They won the first set comfortably. The Indian duo made a good start in the second set with a 4-3 lead. But the Thai duo never allowed the teenagers to settle as they soon raced to a 8-4 lead. They then easily held on to the lead to oust the Indian pair in straight sets.

HS Prannoy [IND] vs Sai Praneeth [IND]

2016 Swiss open champion HS Prannoy will play India’s Sai Praneeth in the opening round of Swiss Masters on Tuesday. Prannoy had made it to the Quarterfinals of the German Open & Syed Modi International Championships but crashed out in the opener against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He will be on a comeback trail against Praneeth who bowed out of the All England Championships & World Championships in the opening rounds.
