Sindhu, in order to come clean, had to take another test. So she was insolation till those results came. It was a difficult time for everyone when they had to wait for Sindhu’s second test result. So much so that the India’s chef-de-mission’s office in Birmingham had to be on their toes throughout. They were in regular touch with the concerned officials to look after the issue and they alongside other members of the Indian team took a sigh of relief when her tests returned negative.

The Indian Olympic Association were keeping a close tab on the entire episode. With Sindhu’s situation unclear, they were not making any official announcement regarding the flag bearer of India.

It was only on Wednesday evening that the officials took upon to make the announcement of Sindhu as flag bearer public as well. Interestingly, Sindhu was the flag bearer of India in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia as well. Had she not come clean on the second test, it could very well have been Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain leading the Indian contingent in the opening ceremony.

Sindhu is one of the star players of India and is looked upon as a gold medal contender. The Indian shuttler has come close to winning but failed in her last two attempts, winning bronze and silver.

Can she make it count in her third straight appearance in the women’s singles at Birmingham? With the kind of form she has shown in big ticket competitions, her wait for CWG gold could well end in Birmingham.
