Throwback to Conor McGregor’s bold claim about fighter pay

McGregor is also someone who does not hold back in expressing his opinion. The Irishman is often on X letting fans know what he thinks about different topics in the sport. Most of these are often controversial and raise a few eyebrows. And his comment about fighter pay is no different.

Back in 2021, McGregor was gearing up to face Dustin Poirier for the third time. In the build-up to the fight, his former opponent, Eddie Alvarez, said money changed McGregor. And after one reply asked McGregor what motivates a man to fight after earning close to a billion, the Irishman had his say.

McGregor replied with, “If you gave 99% of the roster a week’s wage of my net worth, you’d never see them compete again.” Therefore, he claimed that his one week’s wage would retire the majority of the roster. Thus, with this comment, the Irishman wanted to show that it was never about the money.

While McGregor has earned a fortune through his UFC career and business ventures, we can see what he means. McGregor had a difficult start to life and struggled financially. Therefore, if he really did it for the money, he would’ve called it quits long back. However, the fact that he keeps competing despite the riches shows his love for the fight game. Regardless of his earnings, in the end, McGregor is a fighter through and through.

What do you make of these claims from Conor McGregor? Do you think he is financially motivated to make a comeback to the UFC?
