The incident happened in the fifth delivery of the eighth over of Chennai Super Kings’ innings. Chasing a total of 156, CSK found themselves at 50/2, with Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu on crease.

Uthappa went for a straight drive against spinner Hrithik Shokeen, who incidentally was making his IPL debut. The veteran batter ended up hitting it straight to the bowler who grabbed the ball and claimed a catch. Umpire Bruce Oxenford, however, was not particularly convinced and referred the decision to the third umpire. The replays did not prove to be perfectly conclusive as it was not clear whether the ball was touching the ground or Shokeen had his fingers underneath.

The third umpire gave the decision in Uthappa’s favour, which started yet another debate on the umpiring standards of IPL 2022 as the Mumbai Indians players were visibly angry at the decision.
Notably, this is not the first instance where umpiring decisions have been under scrutiny. In the game between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore, umpire Chris Gaffaney was criticized for not detecting a wide delivery, while earlier on in the season, KN Ananthapadmanabhan copped flak for a controversial dismissal of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s skipper Kane Williamson in the match against Rajasthan Royals.
