Middle-order
The middle-order remained a major concern for India as they returned to action after more than six months in ODIs. Shreyas Iyer failed to perform while Rishabh Pant failed to be consistent while Venkatesh Iyer’s experimentation as a finisher batsman on debut went completely wrong. The latter was neither used in the bowling department.
Spin not working
Yuzvendra Chahal & R Ashwin failed to leave an impact as the duo leaked 106 runs in 20 overs with Ashwin’s managing a lone wicket. The inability to pick wickets helped Bavuma & Dussen to script a partnership record and take the game away from India. The last time India toured SA, India won 5-1 as Chahal & Kuldeep Yadav scalped 33 wickets.
Dussen expressed how SA counter-attacked spinners. “I went in and I knew I had to go to my sweeps and reverse-sweeps and put the pressure back on their spinners. It was important to show intent from the start,” said Van der Dussen after the game.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Shardul Thakur ‘the bowler’
With Mohd Shami rested, out-of-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Shardul Thakur failed to assist Jasprit Bumrah. While Bhuvneshwar gave away 64 runs, Shardul leaked 72 runs as the duo went wicketless. The duo needs to be at their best in the powerplay and the death overs which didn’t seem to be the case in the first ODI
