Lionel Messi pays heartfelt homage to Diego Maradona after winning the Ballon d'Or 2023 on his 63rd birthday.

During his Ballon d’Or winning speech, Lionel Messi wished Diego Maradona a heartfelt happy birthday. Following a year in which he led Argentina to World Cup triumph, the 36-year-old has received his astounding ninth award. His eight Ballons d’Or are the most in football history, with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo coming in second with five. And, on what would have been Argentina star Diego Maradona’s 63rd birthday, he paid tribute to him during his acceptance speech.

“Wherever you are, this is also for you. Happy birthday, Diego,” said Messi.
