Erling Haaland BLOCKED from TRADEMARKING name in Norway

Manchester City and Norway star forward, Erling Haaland blocked from trademarking his name in Norway after winning Premier League title

Manchester City’s emerging star and the Premier League record-breaker, Erling Haaland has been blocked from trademarking his own name in Norway. The Norway international has scored 52 goals in 51 games this season and helped the club to win its third consecutive Premier League title.

According to the Norwegian outlet VG, the 22-year-old submitted three applications to the Norwegian Industrial Property Office through the law firm Schjødt. The first application was related to a trademark on his signature. The second application was related to trademarking his lotus celebration. The final one was attempted to trademark his name “Erling Haaland”.

Now, the first two applications were approved and it showed no issues according to Knut Andreas Bostad, the Head of the Section in the Design and Trademark Department in the NIPO. After the approval of the first two applications, Haaland has the rights to them in Norway and can now apply for an international trademark.

On the other hand, the third application has been rejected which was related to trademarking his own name. The reason was a 29-year-old man from Oslo submitted the same application last year. It means he has the rights to this name.

Bostad spoke to VG: “We have a Haaland application that came in to us on September 8, 2022. They have applied to be able to use it on clothing, selling footwear and a number of other things, as part of the things Erling Haaland has subsequently applied for.

He also adds, “It is therefore a discouragement for us. Because we already have a registration inside.”

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has a three-month deadline to appeal this decision. If the 22-year-old footballer wants to trademark his name, he has three options – first, Haaalnd take legal action against the current 29-year-old owner and use the name without permission. The second option is Man City ace pay for consent to use the name. The final option is an easy one and Haaland may go for this. He can simply buy the name from the current owner.

Bostad talked about this trademark and facing such things, “It happens especially for celebrities who show up, then some people think, ‘Wow, I’m going to record this here’.”

If we consider the Norwegian “duty” law on trademarks, the owner will lose the rights if it is not used within five years. Haaland will surely make a visit to Norway again during the summer break and find a solution for this. Currently, he is in England and will be in action for Man City in FA Cup final at Wembley. Then, he will take part in his first-ever Champions League final against Inter.
