Yashasvi Jaiswal began his Test career with aplomb smashing a scintillating century at Dominica. Making his debut, the 21-year-old smashed a century on debut to put India on top in the IND vs WI 1st Test. It is a testament to his grit and excellence as he showed extreme patience to build a partnership with Rohit Sharma to reach the milestone.

Playing in his first test, Yashasvi showed maturity beyond his age to pile on the runs on an insipid wicket at Windsor Park. The left-hander took his time initially, taking up to 16 balls to get his 1st runs. Once settled in, runs began to flow from Jaiswal’s bat. He ended Day 1 on 40 not out, before continuing his brilliance on Day 2.

Hundreds as an opener on Test debut (India)

  • 187 – Shikhar Dhawan vs Australia, Mohali, 2013
  • 134 – Prithvi Shaw vs WI, Rajkot, 2018
  • 100* – Yashasvi Jaiswal vs WI, Roseau, 2023

Jaiswal’s story is one of perseverance and hardships. All before the glitz and glamour of the IPL and India call-up, Jaiswal spent days sleeping on Mumbai maidans. He sold pani puri for a living while working his way through age griup cricket.

Youngest centurions on Test debut for India

  • 18y 329d – Prithvi Shaw vs WI, Rajkot, 2018
  • 20y 126d – Abbas Ali Baig vs ENG, Old Trafford, 1959
  • 20y 276d – Gundappa Viswanath vs AUS, Kanpur, 1969
  • 21y 196d – Yashasvi Jaiswal vs WI, Roseau, 2023
  • 21y 327d – Mohammad Azharuddin vs ENG, Kolkata, 1984

Jaiswal is just the seventh Indian to ever get 100 points in a test abroad. Abbas Ali Baig did so first in 1959 when playing England. The others are Sourav Ganguly against England at Lord’s in 1996, Pravin Amre against South Africa in Durban in 1992, Surinder Amarnath at Auckland in 1976, and Virender Sehwag at Bloemfontein in 2001.
