It should be noted that Star Sports shelled out Rs 23,575 Crore ($3.02 billion) for IPL TV rights for five years. With intense competition from JioCinema which got the digital rights and offered free live streaming, Star Sports has delivered on its promise.

The first step towards having a successful IPL experience for fans was to recruit some of the top commentators and fan favourites. Kevin Pietersen, Simon Doull, besides Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri graced the commentary box.

Star Sports also came up with some unique campaigns such as ‘Rivalry Week’ to hype up traditional rivalries like Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians and so on. Sanjog Gupta said the campaign helped the broadcaster add 21 million new viewers during the week alone.

“We also sought to redefine the traditional TV experience by offering fans at home access to instant replays, key moments, live statistics and highlights on the press of a button on their remotes. This has fuelled the addition of 11 million subscribers during IPL 2023, boosting the penetration of Star Sports to an all-time high,” Gupta told SportsPro.

IPL 2023 Final LIVE Broadcast: Unique holographic presentation

That’s not it though, for the IPL 2023 Final, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis will grace the commentary box in a holographic avatar. Earlier, Star Sports also did the same with Steve Smith, leaving fans in awe.

Through the technology, Faf Du Plessis will be present at the Star Sports studio for Cricket Live show even though he will be physically in South Africa. It will provide viewers with an immersive and lifelike experience. The holographic teleportation technology used by Star Sports in this season with Australian cricketer Steve Smith is state-of-the-art and will surely enthral fans with its seamless and realistic representation.

The unique campaigns and record-breaking viewership numbers have also helped Disney-Star rope in 30 brands for IPL 2023.
