After losing the ODI series for the first time in 23 years, Australia redeemed themselves with a 3-0 clean sweep of Bangladesh.

Australia finished their subcontinent tour with a 3-0 sweep of the hosts, Bangladesh, and they did it convincingly. In the third and final BAN vs AUS T20I in Chattogram, Australia tourists controlled the game from start to finish and won by seven wickets. The bowlers laid the platform. Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson was the standout, returning 2/6 from his four overs. That is the most economical four-over spell ever bowled by an Australian man in a T20I.

The context made it sweeter: two days earlier, on the same pitch, Johnson had leaked 39 runs in two wicketless overs, so this was about as sharp a turnaround as a fast bowler can have.

Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis chipped in with two wickets each, and Bangladesh never got going. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and no partnership got the chance to build. Acting captain Towhid Hridoy was the lone fighter, grinding out 61 off 51 balls with three fours and three sixes. He had almost no help from the other end, and the innings stalled. Bangladesh limped to 109 for 8.

Mitchell Marsh leads demolition job

Set 110 to win, Australia did not hang about. Captain Mitchell Marsh took the attack apart from the first over, racing to a 23-ball fifty before holing out for a 28-ball 60. He hit seven boundaries and four sixes, and the contest was effectively over before the halfway mark of the chase.

Josh Inglis kept the rate up with a quick 17, and Cooper Connolly added a composed 15. Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, and Rishad Hossain each grabbed a consolation wicket for Bangladesh, but the result was never in doubt against batting that powerful.

Tim David put the finishing touch on it, clubbing two sixes in a row to stay unbeaten on 12 from three balls. Australia cruised to 112 for 3 in just 11 overs.

A much-needed series redemption

For a touring side trying to prove a point, this BAN vs AUS series carried real weight. The result is Australia’s first-ever clean sweep of a bilateral T20I series of at least three matches in Asia. Australia suffered a 1-2 series defeat to Bangladesh for the first time in 23 years. This is also Australia’s maiden T20I series win in Bangladesh. The last time they faced off in 2021, the men in yellow lost 1-4.

The 3-0 scoreline in the Bangladesh vs Australia T20I series gives the squad a serious lift. After a disappointing early exit at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka earlier in the year, this tour was a genuine chance to put things right. A side missing several senior players read the tired, slow surfaces better than the hosts did and took control in conditions that should have suited Bangladesh. On this evidence, the white-ball group is moving in the right direction.
