An emotional Neeraj Chopra twitted after he decided to withdraw from the CWG 2022 as he wrote, “Hello everyone, I’m extremely disappointed to inform you all that I will not be able to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
“I had been feeling uncomfortable after the pull I felt in my groin during my fourth throw at the World Championships.
“On having it investigated medically yesterday by a group of doctors here in the US, a minor strain was discovered and I have been advised to undergo rehabilitation and give it rest for the next few weeks,” he wrote.
According to available information Neeraj has suffered from a a groin injury and is ruled out of the competition. It is worth noting that Olympic champion and world silver medalist was set to be flag-bearer during Thursday’s opening ceremony for India.
The defending CWG champion was gutted and further wrote, “I have discussed this with my support team and the IOA, AFI, and SAI’s CAIMS, and we’ve collectively decided that keeping my long-term goals in mind, it would be best for me to skip the CWG in order to avoid risking any further aggravation of the injury.
“Needless to say, I am hurt about not being able to defend my title and missing out on another opportunity to represent the nation.
I am especially disappointed about losing out on the opportunity to be Team India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony, an honour I was looking forward to having in a few days’ time.”

What exactly happened with Neeraj?
Neeraj Chopra revealed after winning the World Athletics silver that he picked up a groin injury during the 12-man final in Eugene.
The 24-year-old Olympic champion conceded that a call on his participation in the Commonwealth Games would be taken after medical assessments of his injury.
Diamond League participation in doubt
- The injury also puts a question mark over Chopra’s Diamond League participation.
- Chopra was to participate in the Lausanne Diamond League on August 26.
- He had finished second in Stockholm and was aiming to qualify for the final in Zurich on September 7 and 8.
- During the media conference just after winning the World Championships silver, Chopra had spoken about a Diamond League title as a major goal.
