A narrative about MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has changed, but not in the way that most people thought it would. After days of rumours about his return, it is believed that the former CSK captain is fully fit to play against the Gujarat Titans. But he has decided not to play. It may surprise many but Dhoni’s logic makes sense.
Why is Dhoni thinking of keeping himself on bench?
CSK have finally found a bit of rhythm after a shaky start. They lost their first three games, but Dhoni wasn’t ready then. However, once Dhoni’s rehab started going well, CSK picked up the form, winning three of their last four games. That big win over the Mumbai Indians (MI) has given them some breathing space and, more importantly, a settled combination. Dhoni, from what is understood, does not want to walk in and disturb that.
As per IndianExpress, it is a very Dhoni call. A selfless call by Thala, who is thinking of stepping aside for now because the team does not need a change at this exact moment. Stephen Fleming did not give much away in the press conference on Saturday. He said, “He’s progressing well. He’s on the road to recovery and doing everything that’s being asked of him.”
Most teams would automatically want to bring back a player like Dhoni. It works differently at CSK. The choice isn’t made quickly, and in this case, it’s based on the situation rather than feelings. Something interesting for CSK, as the shots are made by Dhoni himself.
Dhoni to play for CSK soon
Sanju Samson’s trade has been a masterstroke for Chennai. Aside from the two centuries he has scored while being in the form of his life, his high quality behind the stumps has given CSK superb results. They are not missing Dhoni, at least, in terms of keeping quality. It has not been flawless, but it has been predictable, and that matters in a long tournament.
Kartik Sharma, bought for INR 14.20 is being backed, too, despite being through a lean patch. He has had the debut IPL campaign jitters but the raw talent is there to be seen. In the 2025-26 edition, he was a top performer for Rajasthan, scoring 133 runs in 5 matches at an explosive strike rate of 160.24. In the last game against MI, he smashed Mitchell Santner for two sixes as well.
Meanwhile, bringing in Dhoni would’ve come at the cost of Kartik’s spot. It would make sense but at this stage of his career, Dhoni is perhaps looking to put aside his personal career for the team’s greater vision. Moreover, his inclusion as an Impact player has also been ruled out, with CSK batting coach Michael Hussey saying that Dhoni’s influence would be far better when playing as a keeper.
All in all, we know that Dhoni is fit and available. He could’ve played against MI too but the team was cautious over his fitness. Now, against GT, at Chepauk, there will be another chance. Let’s wait and see who road does Dhoni’s CSK takes.
