Adelaide International: Novak Djokovic is eyeing a grand return to the Australian Open in 2023. Just before the season’s first Grand Slam event, he is set to feature in Adelaide International. In the ATP 250 event, apart from singles, Djokovic is all set to participate in the doubles as well. He will be partnering his friend Vasek Pospisil in the doubles. World No.5 Djokovic will return to Australia for the first time after he was deported from the country earlier this year. The nine-time Australian Open champion was not allowed to enter Australia as he didn’t vaccinate against Covid -19. However, his participation in the event in 2023 was confirmed after his ban was lifted last month.
Adelaide International will serve as his warm-up ahead of the Australian Open. The Serbian has already confirmed his participation in singles. However, he has decided to add more matches under his belt and has opted to play in doubles as well.
He was last seen in doubles most recently during the Laver Cup. He partnered Matteo Berrettini and the pair defeated Alex de Minaur and Jack Sock. It remains to be seen how he fares in the doubles at Adelaide. Both Djokovic and Pospisil will be playing together for the first time.
Djokovic has only one doubles title in his career. He won the Queen’s Club Championship in 2010 alongside partner Jonathan Elrich from Israel. Posipisil meanwhile has pocketed as many as seven titles in doubles.
Meanwhile in the singles, Djokovic will lead the Men’s Singles field. Adelaide International will kickstart from 1st January 2023. The final is scheduled to be played on 8th January.
