Olympic qualification uncertain for wrestlers as UWW seeks recommendation only from WFI

The United World Wrestling (UWW) in a letter made it clear that the names sent by the ad hoc committee appointed by the Indian Olympic Association will not be taken into consideration. The IOA was scheduled to conduct trials on Sunday and Monday.

The Indian wrestling fraternity is staring into an abyss where a lack of option can snatch the dreams of numerous wrestlers from bidding for a life-changing medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Olympics qualification tournament is scheduled to be held from next month and the sport’s world governing body made it clear on Friday that it would only accept names of wrestlers from Wrestling Federation of India.

Sports Ministry issues stern warning to suspended WFI Chief Sanjay Singh for his unfounded remarks on the adhoc committee

The United World Wrestling (UWW) in a letter made it clear that the names sent by the ad hoc committee appointed by the Indian Olympic Association will not be taken into consideration. The IOA was scheduled to conduct trials on Sunday and Monday.

In a letter to WFI president Sanjay Singh, the UWW chief Nenad Lalovic made it clear that the athlete ‘registration can be made only by the UWW affiliated national federations… and no other entity may take this role on your behalf.’

WFI chief Sanjay Singh has urged the government to find a solution before it’s too late.

In the current situation, the government should understand and figure out a solution. The UWW has made it clear through its letter that it won’t accept entries sent by anyone else. So the government should take note of it. So that our country isn’t disrespected and the athletes don’t suffer,” Sanjay told The Indian Express.

A solution on the offering can be the fact that the ad hoc committee selects the athletes while the WFI recommends their names to the world body. “This also can be done. Although I have to see the rules,” Sanjay added.
