Needing 48 to win from the last three overs with only 2 wickets in hand, it was all but over for Velocity in their Women’s T20 Challenge Final against Supernovas. However, in a display of fine hitting, Laura Wolvaardt and Simran Bahadur kept Velocity in the hunt until the final ball of the game, only to fall short by 4 runs.
Wolvaardt began the carnage after she smashed Alana King for a maximum and reached her half-century, before Simran got in on the act to make it a 14-run over. Wolvaardt then smashed Pooja Vastrakar straight down the ground before Simran added two more to her name to make it a 17-run over.
Needing another 17 from the last over, Wolvaardt began the over with a gigantic six, but Sophie Ecclestone held her nerve to help Supernovas seal a last ball thriller.

With the BCCI top brass including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah in attendance, the Women’s T20 challenge presented a perfect spectacle to kick on conversations for a Women’s IPL. Ganguly has previously revealed that plans are in motion to hold a six-team inaugural season starting next year, and the Women’s T20 challenge has proven that there would be no shortage of quality on offer.
