Asian Games: Frenzy in Pakistan as volleyball team beats India in 5-6th classification match

The only time Pakistan volleyball team has won a medal at Asian Games, was way back in the 1962 edition - a bronze.

For ages, India vs Pakistan encounters have been looked at as the mother of all battles and have continued to be so in every sport. The Asian Games are no different where the arch-rivals have been head-to-head in many events till now, and will be up against each other in a few more. Having said that the bitter reality of India vs Pakistan contests is that, the neighbours are nowhere close to India’s prowess in sports and any win for them comes across as a huge surprise for the fans in both countries.

So on Tuesday, when the Pakistan volleyball team beat India in the men’s 5-6th classification match, social media was filled with this ‘achievement’. The users in Pakistan celebrated as if a medal had come their way.

The Pakistan Volleyball Federation was the first to congratulate the team on a ‘historic win’.

Pakistani cricketer Saim Ayub too hailed Pakistan’s win.

A user went on to share Pakistan’s record over India across sports.

Earlier, Pakistan’s volleyball coach had broken down in tears, when they had beaten higher-ranked South Korea in one of the Pool matches.

Interestingly, Pakistan has failed to open its medal account in this year’s Asian Games. India on the other hand, has already bagged a total of 20 medals, with five of them being golds.
