Nick Kyrgios stunned defending champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the US Open on Sunday evening with a brilliant performance to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows. The 23rd seed entered the match with a 3-1 ATP Head2Head lead against Medvedev and in the best form of his career, but taking out the top seed at a Grand Slam was an entirely new challenge. The Australian passed the test with flying colours, playing his aggressive game to triumph after two hours and 53 minutes.
Matteo Berrettini vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Italian Matteo Berrettini reached his second consecutive U.S. Open quarter-final by winning a marathon battle with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 3-6 7-6(2) 6-3 4-6 6-2 on Sunday after the Spaniard suffered an injury in the final set. The 13th seed had lost to Davidovich Fokina on clay in Monte Carlo last year but found the right formula on New York’s hard courts, sending down 17 aces
Casper Ruud vs Corentin Moutet
Casper Ruud recovered from a mid-match wobble at the US Open on Sunday to move past French lucky loser Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 in the fourth round to enter the quarterfinals at the US Open for the first time. The Norwegian looked on course for a comfortable victory against Moutet on Arthur Ashe stadium. However, from 4-2 ahead in the third set, the 23-year-old lost concentration and control on his forehand, with Moutet rallying to clinch the set and a foothold in the match. Ruud however fended off three break points in the fourth set, while he hit his groundstrokes with more depth and spin to eventually advance after three hours and 22 minutes.
Caroline Garcia vs Alison Riske
Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia continued her red-hot form with a crushing 6-4 6-1 win over American 29th seed Alison Riske-Amritraj to sweep into her maiden U.S. Open quarter-final. World number 17 Garcia reached her only other Grand Slam last-eight at Roland Garros five years ago. The 28-year-old is in a rich vein of form, having arrived in New York on the back of a title run in Cincinatti and is now on a 12-match win streak.
Coco Gauff vs Zhang Shuai
The No.12-seeded Gauff clinched a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Zhang Shuai and will meet No.17 Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal. With the victory in the fourth round, Gauff , only 18, became the youngest American woman to reach the quarters here since 2009. Melanie Oudin was 17. The win over Zhang was a triumph of youth over experience. Gauff was the youngest player left in the draw – and Zhang, 33, was the oldest.
Ons Jabeur vs Veronika Kudermetova
Tunisian fifth seed Ons Jabeur survived a thrilling duel to down USA’s Shelby Rogers 4-6 6-4 6-3 at the U.S. Open on Friday to reach the fourth round of the hardcourt major for the first time. The finalist at Wimbledon will take on Veronika Kudermetova in Round 4 on Saturday. The Russian had reached the quarterfinals of the French Open earlier this year, with this being her best finish at the US Open. Kudermetova has won all her games against Jabeur so far, leading their head-to-head 3-0.
