Neeraj Chopra Javelin Thow Olympics: India’s star Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra kept India’s hopes of an elusive Olympic medal from track and field events alive by earning a direct qualification into the finals with a stunning throw of 86.65m that put him on the top of the Group A contest on Wednesday. Competing in his first Olympics, the 23-year-old Chopra took just a few seconds to make to the final round to be held on Saturday as he sent the spear well past the qualifying mark of 83.50m in his first attempt.
Chopra’s performance on Saturday will go down as one of the best performances by an Indian in the Olympics, as he finished ahead of gold medal favourite and 2017 world champion Johannes Vetter of Germany.
Vetter, who had earlier said that Chopra will find it tough to beat him in the Olympics, struggled in his first two throws before crossing the automatic qualification mark with a 85.64m final throw.

Indian Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra progressed for the men’s final here at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday after attaining an automatic qualification in the Men’s Long Throws Qualification — Group A.
Qualifying performance of 83.50 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) will advance to the final of the men’s javelin throw. However, these 12 performers will be a compilation of competitors from Group A and B.
The Group B qualification round will take place later in the day and the remaining throws of Group A are also happening.
Neeraj Chopra who was throwing the javelin in 15th position in the group threw a monstrous throw of 86.65m and automatically qualified for the final after just his first attempt. Finland’s Lassi Etelatalo was another thrower who automatically qualified in the first attempt.
The men’s Javelin throw final will be on August 7 at the Olympic Stadium.
Earlier on Tuesday, another Indian Javelin thrower Annu Rani failed to qualify for the women’s final here at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday after an underwhelming show in the Women’s Long Throws Qualification — Group A

What Chopra & Shivpal have to do to Qualify for the Finals of Javelin Throw?
- Qualification Rules: Qualifying performance 83.50 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) advance to the Final – This means both Indian throwers will either have to achieve the Qualification mark of 83.5m or they have to be in Top 12 performers collectively in two groups
- Group A has 16 Throwers including Neeraj Chopra / Group B also has 16 throwers including Shivpal
- Shivpal has personal best of 86.23 – but his season-best is just 81.63 which is far below the Qualification mark
- Neeraj on the other hand has 88.07 as his personal as well as the season best and should easily achieve the qualification mark.
