Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: The Wimbledon which has a rich history and is one of the major Tennis tournament is set to lose its sheen a bit in the upcoming edition. Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: From Roger Federer to Daniil Medvedev 7 top players who have decided to give Wimbledon a miss: CHECK OUT
Wimbledon this year will not have the participation of players from Russia and Belarus as the All England Lawn Tennis Club has banned the participation of players from both the countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Following this, the ATP and WTA decided to penalise Wimbledon by stripping off ranking points for players from the tournament. This makes Wimbledon an exhibition match as the players will have nothing to gain from the tournament this year. With these decisions, the Wimbledon has already lost its sheen and players too have shown least interest in taking part in the competition.
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev, who is currently the World No.1 sadly won’t take part in the Wimbledon this year, which would have been his first Grand Slam tournament as the top player in the world. The Russian is one of the players affected by the ban. ‘Okay, it’s official’ Right now I don’t know what’s gonna happen. You know, my main job is to play tennis, try to get points here as much as I can. Again, I’m gonna repeat again, if I can play Wimbledon I will be happy to be there, even without points.” However it looks likely that the organisers of the Wimbledon are not going to lift the ban.
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev, who is the World No.2 right now is also set to miss the Grass Court major this year as he is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the French Open. With him and the World No.1 Daniil Medvedev not available, this will be the first time since the ATP Rankings were introduced in 1973 that the Wimbledon will not see the participation of the top 2 players in the world.
Zverev sustained the injury dueing his semifinal clash against Rafael Nadal at the French Open and has now underwent a surgery this week. He has now started his rehabilitation and will look to enter the circuit soon.
Roger Federer
Roger Federer who is yet to feature in a single tournament this year after undergoing knee surgery last year will not take part in the Wimbledon. The 20-time Grand Slam winner has earmarked the Laver Cup in September as his likely comeback this year. Federer last played in the WImbledon last year, where he faced Quarterfinal defear against Hubert Hurkacz.
Aryna Sabalenka
World No.6 Aryna Sabalenka will be missing this year’s Wimbledon after the ban due to her nationality. Sabalenka is one of the top players, who reached the semifinals last year. Sabalenka has given consistent performances this year but has so far now won any title. She bowed out from the fourth round at Australian Open this year and faced third round exit at French Open. AT the Libema Open, she finished as runner-up but faced first round defeat at Berlin.
Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka has officially announced her withdrawal from the Wimbledon as she is suffering from a leg injury. The 24-year old former World No.1 also suffered an achilles issue during the Italian Open and is yet to recover fully from it.
Osaka has also said that a part of her decision to skip Wimbledon were influenced by the tournament not having ranking points this year. “I feel like if I play Wimbledon without points, it’s more like an exhibition. I know this isn’t true right? But my brain just feels that way. Whenever I think something like an exhibition, I just can’t go at it 100%.”
Victoria Azarenka
Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka, who has made two semifinal appearances at Wimbledon will miss the edition this year as she is from Belarus. Azarenka hasn’t been in a great form this year. In the Grand Slam tournaments this year while she faced fourth round exit at Australian Open, she couldn’t go past the third round at French Open. She is ranked 20th in the world at the moment and being one of the top players her being unable to participate is a loss for the tournament.
Andrey Rublev
24-year old Andrey Rublev, who has made rapid progress in the recent past will not be able to participate in the Wimbledon as he is a Russian. Rublev is currently ranked 8th in the world and he has given consistent performances this year.
He bowed out from the third round at the Australian Open earlier this year but made his second consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the French Open. He won the Open 13 title this year and also defeated Novak Djoovic in the Serbia Open final to win the title. He was one of the first Russian-born players to speak about the war after he wrote “No war please” on a camera during the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this year.
