At age 36, Novak Djokovic has demonstrated that he is not yet prepared to hand the baton to the next generation. The ‘Big Three’ era of tennis may be coming to an end with Roger Federer’s retirement and Rafael Nadal’s plans to retire after the next season, but Djokovic, the final member of the trio, showed his enduring power.

His victory over Daniil Medvedev at the U.S. Open, which he won 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3, was his fourth at Flushing Meadows and gave him a record-tying 24th Grand Slam victory. It’s obvious that Djokovic has higher tennis goals in mind.

Djokovic stated that sometimes wonder why he still needs this at this point after everything he has done. How much longer do he want to continue? He, ofcourse, has these inquiries in mind.

Djokovic has won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2023 after victories at the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier in the year, making him the first person to accomplish this feat four times. By losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, he was denied the Calendar Grand Slam, but the Serb still won three major championships in an outstanding campaign.

Djokovic put on another outstanding performance in the US Open final, winning the first set easily and the second one-hour, 44-minute match. Early in the third, he traded breaks with Medvedev, but he held on to win the US Open for the first time since 2018.

After the victory, Djokovic talked about how he had always wanted to compete at the top level of his sport. When questioned about a probable impending retirement, the 36-year-old quipped that he might continue working for a while.
