Mon 29 Nov: Croatia v Italy (Turin)

Croatia, who beat Australia 3-0 in their opening tie, booked top spot in their group and a quarter-final tie against Italy after Nino Serdarusic beat Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 6-4. The 2018 champions were pegged back, however, when Hungary’s 282nd-ranked Zsombor Piros recovered to beat former US Open champion Marin Cilic 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 — his second major scalp after dispatching Australia’s John Millman on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Italy became the first team to book its spot in the final eight after it beat Colombia to take two points from Group E, which it also shares with the United States. Lorenzo Sonego beat Nicolas Mejia 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, and Jannik Sinner followed with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Daniel Elahi Galan, in the matches in Turin.

Tues 30 Nov: Great Britain v Germany (Innsbruck)

Great Britain qualified by finishing at the top of their group, knocking out Australia in the process. Britain’s doubles pair of Joe Salisbury and Skupski won in straight sets to seal the tie against the Czech Republic 2-1 and secure top spot ahead of France. Britain initially made things difficult when Dan Evans lost his singles rubber against Tomas Machac, capitulating in the second set when he looked on track to force a decider.

The Briton, ranked 25 in the world, won four games in a row and then went 5-2 up in the second set before losing five straight games to give 143rd ranked Machac a 6-2, 7-5 victory. However, British number one Cameron Norrie managed to pull one rubber back after being stretched to three sets, beating Jiri Lehecka 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

Germany meanwhile defeated Novak Djokovic led Serbia and Austria to set up a clash against Great Britain. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz defeated Philipp Oswald and Oliver Marach 6-3, 6-4 to clinch Germany’s spot in the quarter-finals in Group F. Britain however will be favourites to seal the win on Tuesday.

Wed 1 Dec: Kazakhstan v Serbia (Madrid)

Novak Djokovic’s Serbia took one of the two best runners-up spots and a place in the last eight by virtue of their better match win-loss records among the second-placed sides throughout the group stages. Serbia’s chances looked bleak after their loss to Germany, but Russia did them favours with a win over defending champions Spain to seal their spot.

Djokovic and Co. will face Kazakhstan, who had Alexander Bublik to thank for their place in the quarter-finals. The World No. 36 downed Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 7-6(6) in 83 minutes to clinch a 2-0 victory for Kazakhstan against Canada. Bublik won 84 per cent (42/50) of his first-serve points and hit five aces in a dominant display.

Earlier, Mikhail Kukushkin laid the foundations for Kazakhstan’s victory, edging Brayden Schnur 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5 in the first match of the tie. The World No. 183 recovered from squandering three match points at 6-5 in the second set as he raised his level in the decider to triumph. In the final match of the tie, Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov sealed Kazakhstan’s win in style, beating Peter Polansky and Schnur 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-1.

The Russian Tennis Federation secured its place in the quarter-finals at the Davis Cup Finals Sunday. The former champion headed into the decisive doubles match level at 1-1 against Spain, knowing one game would be enough to secure its place in the last eight. Andrey Rublev held serve in the opening game to seal qualification from Group A in Madrid. The World No. 5 teamed with Aslan Karatsev, edging Marcel Granollers and Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours.

Earlier, in the first match of the tie, Lopez rolled back the years to upset Rublev 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 47 minutes. The 40-year-old fired 14 aces and won 82 per cent (40/49) of his first-serve points as he rallied to triumph in front of a raucous home crowd at the Madrid Arena.
