About Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is one of the most gifted players of spin in the world. The batter is known as a spin basher and has an impeccable record against all types of spinners in all three formats. Born in Mumbai, he has continued the trend of great batters coming from the region, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Rohit Sharma.

Iyer is an extremely confident individual who backs himself against every bowler in any situation. Although not that tall, the right-hander is known for his hitting ability. The batter is a constant in India’s ODI team and has often been touted as a contender for captaincy in 50-over cricket.

Career

Domestic Career

Shreyas Iyer started his cricketing journey in 2014, when he made his List A debut for Mumbai. His constant success at the domestic level saw him get picked by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2015. He performed consistently in List A, first-class, and the IPL and was finally picked for India in 2017.

IPL Career

Shreyas Iyer was picked by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2015, a year after he made his List A debut. After consistent performances, he was named as their captain in 2018 and took them to the playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Despite taking them to the Final in 2020, Iyer left the franchise after the 2021 season. The batter claimed that the Capitals weren’t willing to have him as their captain and asked them to not retain him.

He was subsequently picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2022 mega auction for Rs 12.25 crore. He did well for the franchise, becoming their leading run scorer in the first season, but failed to take them to the playoffs. Iyer suffered a back injury that saw him miss the IPL 2023 edition, but the batter is set to return for the 2024 season as their skipper.

International Career

Test Career

Iyer made his Test debut in November 2021. He showed his talent right away and became the 16th Indian to score a Test century on debut. Since making his debut, Shami has been a constant member of the Test team and has one century and five fifties to his name. The batter has also played in the World Test Championship Final 2023.

ODI Career

Shreyas Iyer is currently one of the best ODI batters in the world. Having been representing India since 2017, the batter has played in one ODI World Cup and has more centuries in the event than Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid. Iyer is the third-fastest Indian player to score 2000 ODI runs and currently averages a touch below 50.

T20 International Career

Similar to ODIs, Iyer has found success in T20Is as well. The 29-year-old has played 51 T20Is in his 6-year career. The batter has eight fifties to his name and strikes at a rapid pace (136.12). He is the 4th Indian batter after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul to score three consecutive fifties in the shortest format of the game.
