As of now, Shami looks to be an ideal candidate. The pacer is also one of the standbys in the Indian World Cup squad. Though Siraj is not included in the standbys, the selectors might even look at his as a potential standby.

Interestingly, Shami was not in the Indian picture for the shorter format. It was only after the poor showing by the pacers in the Asia Cup, which helped him seal his spot in the standbys. In fact, he was supposed to play in the T20 series against Australia and South Africa.
But then, he was ruled out of the Australia series due to Covid. He has returned negative recently. If Shami is taken to Australia, one does not know about his match fitness. He has not played a competitive cricket match for India since November last year.
After the Indian team reached Australia, India are set to face Australia and New Zealand in the practice matches. The BCCI also has plans to play some more practice matches in Australia. Ghavri believes these games will come in handy for Shami to help him gain match fitness.
“I believe India can bring Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj for Bumrah in the World Cup. They are both good pace bowlers for Australian conditions. When it comes to a competition like the World Cup, you need bowlers with experience. Shami is experienced and has some good pace to help India in Australia. The T20 World Cup is around three weeks away. Shami can use the warm up matches (even if he has not played much of late) before the World Cup to get fit as well,” Ghavri told InsideSport.
Irrespective of who selectors pick as Bumrah’s replacement, those are big foots to fill. There is no one in world cricket, who can execute the yorkers with such consistency like Bumrah at the death. His replacement will be announced soon as the teams can make changes to the squad till October 9.
