Tokyo Olympics: Head of the Olympics organizing committee not ruling out 11th hour cancellation of the games: Report

Tokyo Olympics – 11th Hour Cancellation not Ruled out: Why Muto is saying that last minute cancellation is possible – Rising coronavirus cases have presented organisers with mounting challenges, with nine more positive cases in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of people affected to 67.

  • Czech beach volleyball trainer Simon Nausch has tested positive
for COVID-19, the Czech Olympic team said on Tuesday. Nausch is the third member of the Czech delegation to be confirmed with the virus. On Monday, beach volleyball player Ondrej Perusic recorded a positive test. Nausch and Perusic have both left the Olympic village to isolate themselves, their team said.
  • The tally also included an Olympic volunteer for the first time since the committee started compiling figures on July 1, bringing the total number of games-related infections to 67, three days out from the opening ceremony.
  • Meanwhile, organizers revealed that of the 21 members of the South African men’s soccer team who were identified as close contacts, three were exempt from self-quarantine after further case investigation and contact tracing.
  • Elsewhere, two Mexican baseball players tested positive for COVID-19 before departing for Tokyo, Mexican baseball authorities said Monday. The team, which faces host Japan on July 31, still plans to fly to Tokyo.

Tokyo Olympics: Asked at a news conference if the Games, which are due to open on Friday, might still be cancelled, Toshiro Muto said he would keep an eye on infection numbers and hold discussions with organisers if necessary.

“We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases,” said Muto.

“We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”

Tokyo Olympics – Covid-19 cases are rising in Tokyo rising and the Games, postponed last year because of the pandemic, will be held without spectators.

Japan this month decided that participants would compete in empty venues to minimise the risk of further infections.

Tokyo Olympics: The opening ceremony will also take place without major Olympic sponsors, dealing another blow to a slimmed-down Games as more athletes tested positive for the coronavirus.

Tokyo Olympics – 11th Hour Cancellation not Ruled out: Muto, a former top financial bureaucrat with close ties to Japan’s ruling party, is known for his careful choice of words, while organisers are facing a domestic public angry about coronavirus restrictions and concerned over a possible spike in cases triggered by Games attendees arriving from abroad.
