Jat held the national record by clocking 1:29:54 and qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics at the National Open Championships in February last year. India women’s hockey team have had a dream run in the tournament and could clinch their maiden Olympics medal in what is only their third appearance at the Summer Games. Rani Rampal and Co. will take on Great Britain in the bronze medal match and will hope to cap off their campaign with a podium finish. The two played earlier in the competition, with India losing 4-1, as Sharmila Devi scored the Indian eves only goal of the game. The India women’s hockey team will hope to script history and match up the men’s hockey team heroics on Friday and return home with a bronze for their efforts.
Wrestling @TBD: Akmataliev Ernazar vs Bajrang Punia (Men’s Freestyle 65kg 1/8 Final)
World No.1 Bajrang Punia is India’s biggest medal hope and the wrestling superstar will take Kyrgyzstan’s Ernazar Akmataliev in the round of 16. Punia has three World Championship medals to his name and qualified for the Olympics by winning a bronze medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships. He is the first Indian freestyle wrestler to win a second world championship medal after he earned a silver in 2018 Budapest, after his first success in 2013.
Wrestling @TBD: Hamdi Sarra vs Seema Bisla (Women’s Freestyle 50kg 1/8 Final)
Seema Bisla will begin her maiden Olympics campaign when she takes on Tunisia’s Sarra Hamdi in the Women’s freestyle wrestling 50kg 1/8 final. The 28-year-old has seen her fair share of disappointments in the past but bounced back in style to book her ticket to Tokyo. She won the bronze medal in the women’s 50 kg event at the 2021 Asian Wrestling Championships and qualified for the Summer Games via the World Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Bulgaria. She will be featuring in her maiden Olympics campaign and will be expected to make it past the initial rounds. Her opponent, Sarra Hamdi won silver at the 2019 African Games and has won two silver and two bronze medals at the African Championships.
