IPL 2024 Auction: The top 5 most expensive buys in the inaugural IPL Auction

3 of the top 5 most expensive players in the inaugural auction were Indian.

With the IPL 2024 auction in December, players like Travis Head, Gerald Coetzee, and Rachin Ravindra might be one of the most expensive buys in IPL history. However, things were a little different in the inaugural IPL auction. With legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, and Shane Warne going under the hammer, none of them even featured in the most expensive player list. Fans would be shocked to know who the five most expensive buys were in the inaugural IPL auction.

Player Team Price
MS Dhoni Chennai Super Kings $ 1.5 million
Andrew Symonds Deccan Chargers $ 1.35 million
Sanath Jayasuriya Mumbai Indians $ 975 thousand
Ishant Sharma Kolkata Knight Riders $ 950 thousand
Irfan Pathan Kings XI Punjab $ 925 thousand
In the inaugural IPL auction dollars was used as the official currency instead of the Indian rupee

The top 5 most expensive buys in the inaugural IPL Auction

  • MS Dhoni: The Indian skipper had led his team to the 2007 T20 World Cup title a year prior. The pick of the Chennai Super Kings boded well for him, as Dhoni has been a part of CSK every single season since.

  • Andrew Symonds: The all-rounder was the most expensive foreign player in the inaugural auction. Symonds was paid just $115,000 less than Dhoni, as he was snatched by the now-defunct Deccan Chargers.
  • Sanath Jayasuriya: The swashbuckling opener went to the Mumbai Indians, where he joined Sachin Tendulkar as the second opener. The $975,000 pick boded well for MI, as the southpaw made over 500 runs in the inaugural edition.
