India endured a heavy 0-5 defeat against Argentina in their opening match of the FIH Women’s Pro League European leg in Antwerp, Belgium, on Wednesday. Argentina dominated from the outset, with goals from Agustina Gorzelany (13th), Valentina Raposo (24th), Victoria Miranda (41st), and two strikes from Julieta Jankunas (53rd, 59th).
Playing under new coach Harendra Singh for the first time, the Indian team struggled to create scoring opportunities in the initial half. Surprisingly, experienced goalkeeper Savita Punia was benched, with Bichu Devi Kharibam starting in goal.

Argentina displayed creativity and attacking prowess, securing seven penalty corners in the first two quarters. Gorzelany capitalized on the second penalty corner with a precise flick to Bichu’s left. Despite a marginally better second-quarter performance, India conceded another goal from Raposo’s variation strike on Argentina’s fifth penalty corner.
In the third quarter, India played with increased speed and intent, making promising circle penetrations. However, they couldn’t find the finishing touch to convert their chances.
Meanwhile, Argentina extended their lead with Miranda’s reverse hit goal, leaving Bichu with no chance. Jankunas sealed Argentina’s comprehensive victory with two well-executed field goals within six minutes. The Indian women will seek to rebound when they face hosts Belgium on Thursday.
