Industries to be shut during Hockey World Cup 2023

According to a report by the Hindu, due to the hockey World Cup, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) is closing 21 sponge iron facilities in January.

Because the world hockey tournament will be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela between January 5 and January 28, sponge iron factories will be shut down for 24 days.

The OSPCB’s shutdown notice to sponge iron facilities in Kuarmunda and Kalunga will ensure that Rourkela’s skies will remain free because international players will be in the city during the tournament.

Less than 20 kilometers separate the tournament locations from the factories.

Sponge Iron Units are not polluting: OSPCB

An OSPCB representative said that the sponge iron units weren’t truly polluting. The issue would occur in the event of a power outage when there is a chance that thick, black smoke from sponge iron units’ electrostatic precipitators may ascend above Rourkela, he said.

Previously there have been complaints of heavy pollution in Rourkela which is an industrialized region. As a result of the pollution, the residents have been facing issues with plants and houses in the city and adjoining areas are also getting affected.

Despite repeated complaints, the local authorities have been unable to deal with the issue. With a major tournament like the World Cup coming up the authorities have sprung into action giving the Rourkela residents respite until the Hockey World Cup 2023 matches get over.

Hockey World Cup 2023: Odisha police to make holistic plans for security

Odisha police DCP Prateek Singh in an interview to Odisha TV said that the preparations for the tournament are on the right track. He further said that the Commissionerate Police is working in coordination with all stakeholders and agencies.

The DCP further said that the security at the hotels will be tight and that no outsiders will be allowed.

He said, “We took stock about the places and points where security deployment is essential. Planning has been made to isolate players and other customers of the hotels during the event”.

He added, “Control room and the deployment of the security officials have also been planned. We will ensure that all the players will remain safe, from security point of view. We have also made an elaborate plan for their smooth movement from the team hotels to stadiums and vice versa,”.
