Right from the start, Zverev started showcasing his dominance as he let Delbonis win only one game. He broke the Argentine’s service thrice to win the first set 6-1. In the second seed, however the German was put to test by the Argentine.
Delbonis gave a terrific fightback and broke Zverev several times to take the game 6-5. In the end, Zverev managed to win the 12th game of the set to extend his unbeaten record against Delbonis to 3-0. Zverev will next face Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the third round on 14th April, Thursday.
Zverev is looking for a resurgence after suffering five big upsets in 2022. His best result this year is a runner-up finish at Open Sud de France, where he lost to Alexander Bublik in straight sets in the final.
In this tournament, last year he lost in the Round of 16 and is also looking to go past the third round this year. He reached the semifinals of this tournament in 2018 edition after consecutive wins against Gilles Muller, Jan Lennard Struff, Richard Gasquet and Kei Nishikori. That was his best performance at Monte Carlo so far.
