Post-retirement plans

Just a few months after COVID-19 put a stop to professional tennis — and practically everything else — Barty made the most of her downtime by working on her golf game. She cut her handicap from ten to four and went on to win the annual Brookwater Golf & Country Club women’s club championship.

Now she is all set to compete in a global golf tournament that will be televised across Australia just a week after announcing her first career move post-retirement.

In June, the tournament, which is part of the inaugural Icons Series, will be held at the Liberty National course in New Jersey, USA.  It’ll be a nine-hole team match-play exhibition event with some of the biggest stars in sports, including boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and England striker Harry Kane.

The rest of the World team will be led by Ernie Els, while Team USA will be led by Fred Couples. Barty said she was keen to bring the Icons concept to Australia.

“I’m excited to be part of the Icons Series and I hope through my participation in the series that we can encourage more women and girls to participate in golf around the world,” she said.

“The series is also a great opportunity for athletes to have an impact on local community and charity projects in each of the host destinations.

“It’s such a unique opportunity to have fun, test yourself, and compete against the world’s greatest athletes in a sport that we are all so passionate about. I can’t wait to experience Liberty National and learn from our iconic captain Ernie Els. I hope all the Aussie fans in New York and New Jersey come out to cheer us on.”

Tennis career

Barty retired after winning 15 singles titles and 12 doubles titles. Her singles victories include three Grand Slams, the most recent of which came at the Australian Open earlier this year in her home country.

She was also the current Wimbledon champion, who was set to defend her title in 2022. It was the Queenslander’s second coming after she took an indefinite break in 2014, while ranked outside the top 200.

Barty’s short cricket career

Barty was also a professional cricketer once. In 2014, the Australian ace took an indefinite break from tennis and signed to play in the Women’s Big Bash League, Australia’s premier T20 league. She played for the Brisbane Heat, a franchise that competes in both the women’s and men’s BBL.

Barty, who had no professional training in the sport, appeared in ten games for the Heats and had the highest score 39 runs. She also played for Queensland in two 50-over games in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), helping Wests win their local competition by top-scoring in the grand final and averaging 46.60 for the season, including a century. She quickly realised that tennis, not cricket, was her true calling and returned to the sport.
