The McLaren team boss, Andreas Seidl told the Race last year that he was not a fan of the Q2 rule in motorsport.
“Even in the last Strategic Advisory Committee session, an important regulatory change was discussed and later on given the green signal. The report read that the top ten drivers on the grid will no longer be forced to line up at the start with the set of tyres they used in the Q2.”
“Teams are now free to choose the most suitable compound for the race. It has now entered the sporting regulations which will come in force from the start of the 2022 season.”
“From our point of view, we were always pushing to get rid of this rule. It is the right decision from the sporting perspective.”
Even Ross Brawn, the F1 managing director was in support of this.

“One of the low points of Q2 race tyres was that it gave those who are really quick even more edge. They can easily choose whichever tyre they wanted for Q2. Removing the rule was not a big issue at all. We are looking at the future and whether the Q2 race tyre is better or worse for the race.”
