WATCH Joe Root take a BLINDER on Day 4 of Ashes 2023 second Test

Joe Root surpassed Alastair Cook to become England's top outfield catch taker of all-time in Test cricket.

Ashes 2023: ENG vs AUS 2nd Test: Former England captain, Joe Root left spectators at Lord’s in awe after he pulled off a breathtaking catch to dismiss Australia’s Travis Head on Day 4 of the second Ashes Test.

In the 68th over of Australia’s innings, Stuart Broad delivered a short-pitched ball that forced Head to hop and fend with his bat. The ball looped towards the left of short leg, where Root showed a lightning-fast reflexes and plucked the catch with his left hand.

With the catch, Root surpassed former England opener Alaister Cook to become the highest outfield catcher in Test cricket for England with 176 catches.

Root’s stunning catch not only elevated him to the top of England’s list for outfield catches in Test cricket but also earned him a spot alongside the legendary Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid in an exclusive group.

Notably, Dravid holds the record for the most catches as an outfield player in Test cricket with 210 catches. Root’s remarkable feat secured him the sixth position on the list with his 176th take.

Despite Root’s heroics, Australia maintained control of proceedings on the fourth day of the second Ashes Test. Australia have lost five wickets but have a lead of over 300.

The visitors resumed their innings at 130 for 2 on Day 4, holding a commanding lead of 221 runs.

Overnight batter Usman Khawaja, who started the day on 58, was the first wicket fall on the day as he departed on 77.

Earlier on Day 3, Mitchell Starc led Australia’s charge to dismantle the English batting lineup. The Ben Stokes -led side eventually collapsed for 325 all out, handing the world Test champions a 91-run lead in the first innings.
