Shreyas Iyer's last international came against Australia on October 25 in Sydney.

Shreyas Iyer has received fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE). The Indian ODI vice-captain was selected for the India vs New Zealand series, but with an asterisk.

Shreyas was expected to be cleared to play international cricket only after he had no issues upon his return in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Facing Himachal Pradesh, Shreyas scored 82 (53) while batting at number four and leading Mumbai.

BCCI wanted to be certain that Shreyas’ body could withstand the rigours of competitive cricket. He’s slated to play against Punjab on January 8, which is expected to be the last hurdle. But the medical team at CoE has seen enough.

According to Dainik Jagran journalist Abhishek Tripathi, CoE head VVS Laxman has written to Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar to inform him that Shreyas is available for selection in the India vs New Zealand ODI series.

Several members of Team India had already reached Vadodara for the training camp, which was to commence on January 7. The first ODI will be played on January 11, giving Shreyas ample time to join the team. Rishabh Pant will also play for Delhi in the last group stage match of VHT.

However, given that Shreyas has been granted permission to play, Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t have any chance to play against New Zealand. The batter from Maharashtra was next in line to Shreyas and was to come into the team if the Indian ODI vice-captain couldn’t play.
