Cricket World Cup: More trouble for Sri Lanka after Delhi disaster, know why?

ICC rubbed salt in Sri Lanka's wounds after 102-run hammering against South Africa with 10% fine for maintaining slow over rate.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team continue a disastrous start in Cricket World Cup. After a 102-run hammering by South Africa in Delhi, Dasun Shanaka & Co have been fined 10% of their match fee for slow over rate in SA vs SL clash on Saturday.

“Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be 2 over(s) short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration,” ICC said in a statement.

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players will receive 5 per cent of their match fees for every over bowled outside the allotted time. As Dasun Shanaka & Co bowled two overs beyond the time limit, they have received 10%.

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf levelled the charge.

Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan next in Hyderabad. With another tough battle in hand, Dasun Shanaka & Co will look to bounce back.

Disaster in Cricket World Cup

After a 13-match winning streak in ODIs, Sri Lanka’s fate has turned for the worse. Sri Lanka Cricket Team suffered a humiliating defeat in the Asia Cup final to India. With Mohammed Siraj bagged a fifer in 17 deliveries, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 51. The final lasted just 24 overs.

And on Saturday, they suffered a humiliating 102-run loss to South Africa in their Cricket World Cup opener. Aiden Markram smashed 49-ball century to power South Africa to 428/5, the highest score of World Cup ever. 49-ball ton was also the fastest century in a World Cup.

In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 326. That hit Sri Lanka’s net run rate badly in the Cricket World Cup. They are now on the 9th spot in the Points Table.
