That said, the super-fight can possibly happen next. Per Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso, they recently met David Benavidez’s representatives to talk about the potential clash. However, a rematch against Dmitry Bivol remain the first preference for Team Canelo.
ESPN broke the news as Canelo Alvarez can move up to the light heavyweight division again after a successful undisputed super middleweight title defense against John Ryder.
Canelo suffered his second pro-loss against Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title in May 2022. The huge upset forced Canelo to come down at 168 lbs and defend his belts against Golovkin and Ryder.
Now that he has returned to the win column, Canelo might have some complexities in leaving the super middleweight category again.
27-0 as a professional with 23 KO wins, David Benavidez also holds the WBC Interim super middleweight belt. It means that he is currently a mandatory challenger to Canelo’s undisputed status at 168 lbs.
Canelo Alvarez might be forced to face David Benavidez for that. However, he has desired to avenge the defeat against Dmitry Bivol over anything else.

Can Canelo Alvarez avenge Dmitry Bivol or is it time to meet David Benavidez?
Canelo failed to avenge his maiden career defeat against Floyd Mayweather. A 23-year-old Canelo got schooled by his 36-year-old opposition when they squared off in September 2013.
Canelo Alvarez demanded a rematch several times and even justified the loss by claiming that he was too young to accept the challenge back then.
However, Dmitry Bivol cracked up on Canelo when the Mexican boxer seemed invincible to many people. Despite the defeat, Alvarez has labeled himself a better boxer than Bivol.
It remains to be seen whether he can actually take out the undefeated Russian boxer. If not, David Benavidez looks capable of offering a solid challenge to Canelo.
