Australian Open 2023: The Electronic line-calling system being used at the Australian Open has come under the scanner. On Tuesday, the Mixed Doubles contest featuring Australian pair John-Patrick Smith and Lizette Canbrera and Rafael Matos and Luisa Stefani had to be stopped for a few minutes after a line-calling error from the automated system. Australia’s John-Patrick Smith began the Mixed Doubles contest with his serve. Despite clearly landing inside the service box, it was called a foul. The Australian pair were surprised with the call and play halted for a few minutes. Chair umpire got in touch with the other officials and rectified the mistake, allowing Patrick Smith to serve yet again.
The electronic line-calling was introduced for the first time in the Australian Open in 2021. The technology replaced the line judges in an effort to reduce the number of staff on-site during the COVID-19 pandemic. The technology works with remote tracking cameras around the court, sending the audio line calls in real time.

However, the technology is still no 100% right as there have also been errors in the past. Much recently in this year’s Australian Open, Jelena Rybakina wasn’t too happy with it.
“Honestly, this live electronic system, I don’t know. Sometimes it feels like it makes some mistakes,” she said after her victory against Coco Gauff in the fourth round.
“Of course, we have to play. Sometimes I look at my team because I know I’m wrong, but I feel like some balls are pretty close, so I want to know what they think about the call,” she added. 17th seed Istapenko went down in straight sets against Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinal of the tournament on Tuesday, 24th January 2023.
