Once daily wage laborer, Ram Baboo walks his way to Asian Games bronze

Indian athlete Ram Baboo worked as a daily-wage labourer during Covid-19 in 2020.

It is fairly common in India to find athletes coming from humble backgrounds. Such stories are in plenty, but each one of them holds a special place in the fans’ memories. On Wednesday, Ram Baboo won a bronze medal in the mixed 35km walk race to swell India’s tally past 70, at the Asian Games. As per various reports, the hard-working athlete worked as an MNREGA worker and dug ditches to earn his livelihood, during the Covid-19 lockdown.

A video of the 24-year-old has surfaced on Twitter, where Ram Baboo is seen at work at an unknown location. Interestingly, he is the national record holder in the men’s 35km walk event with a best timing of 2:29:56, which he set earlier this year.
