Asian Games: Vishnu Saravanan wins bronze, secures third medal for India in Sailing

Vishnu Saravanan won India's third medal in Sailing at the Asian Games 2023. Earlier Neha Thakur won silver, while Eabad Ali bagged bronze

India’s Vishnu Saravanan secured a bronze medal in the ILCA7 sailing event at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou on Wednesday. This is India’s third medal in sailing after Neha Thakur’s silver and Eabad Ali’s bronze. The 24-year old finished the event with a score of 34 points after 11 races.

Vishnu finished behind Republic of Korea’s Jeemin Ha, who won the silver. The Korean has 42 points, and 33 net points. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Ryan Lo won the gold. He had 32 points, and 26 net points.

Vishnu Saravanan was one of the favourites for a podium finish in this year’s Asian Games. The U-21 World Championships bronze medallist, Vishnu also finished 25th in the World Championships in 2021, which was the best-ever finish by an Indian in the marquee event.

The podium finish by the sailor, concluded India’s campaign in sailing at the Asian Games. India will return with three medals from the sport. On Tuesday, 17-year-old Neha Thakur bagged India’s first medal in the sailing event. She clinched the silver medal in the Girl’s Dinghy – ILCA4 event with an overall timing of 24:48.

She secured a total of 27 points after 11 races. Eabad Ali meanwhile sealed the second medal in the Surfing RS:X. He bagged a bronze medal with 57 points and 50 net points. In total, India has so far clinched 21 medals, which includes 5 gold, 6 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
