WATCH: Avinash Sable becomes first Indian to win Asian Games men’s 3000m steeplechase gold

Avinash Sable had won a silver medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase at CWG 2022, to go with Asian Games gold now.

India’s Avinash Sable became the first from the country to win the gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event on Sunday, with a decent timing of 8:19.50s. The 29-year-old was in command right from the start of the race and took the lead in the second lap itself, to thwart any kind of competition. In the process, he also shattered the previous Asian Games record of 8:22.79s, in the name of Iran’s Hossein Keyhani set in 2018.

Sable cut down his pace and did not go all out in an attempt to go for gold as he did not want to take any risk in his last race of the season. One of the reasons was that he is competing in the men’s 5000m event as well, which is as grueling as the steeplechase if not more. At the CWG 2022, where Sable had finished second in his pet event, gave it his all in the race, and was drained out for the 5000m event.

He completed the race ahead of the Japanese duo of Aoki Ryoma and Sanada Seiya who secured silver and bronze medal finishes, respectively. Earlier in the day, Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 200m event after she finished third in her heat with timings of 23.78 seconds at the Asian Games.
